Bill Walton's remarkable legacy has led some to hail him as the greatest athlete ever to emerge from San Diego, solidifying his place on the Mount Rushmore of San Diego-born athletes.

Walton's basketball journey began in earnest at Helix High School, where his exceptional abilities quickly distinguished him, leading to back-to-back state championships and ultimately securing a scholarship to UCLA, where he would be mentored by the iconic coach John Wooden.

From the beginning, Bill Walton was a larger-than-life personality. My mom attended UCLA during some of Walton’s years and often spoke about how much the campus was energized by his presence and Coach Wooden’s determination to lead the team to success.

When Bill Walton chose to grow out his hair and beard, it violated the team's grooming policy established by Coach John Wooden. Despite Walton's insistence on retaining his beard, Coach Wooden responded with a memorable and tactful approach, acknowledging Walton's right to personal grooming choices but indicating that the team would miss him if he didn't comply.

One such developer, Harry Chandler, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, decided to erect a massive sign on the hills above Hollywood to promote his upscale housing development known as "Hollywoodland." The sign was constructed using 13,000 wooden panels and adorned with thousands of light bulbs, creating a spectacle that could be seen for miles. It was a brilliant marketing strategy that aimed to attract society's elite to this new neighborhood.

The day’s first panel featured Alexis Ohanian, founder of the newly IPOed Reddit, and Neal Hubman, an early Reddit employee with a wealth of captivating stories, also serving as the President of the Los Angeles Golf Club.

As someone who has played golf for as long as I can remember, the TGL league has sparked my excitement. It's a joint endeavor involving the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and a sports venture group. This league consists of franchises located in major cities. Notably, the Los Angeles Golf Club roster includes some of the PGA Tour's biggest names: Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Sahith Theegala.

The first match will be in January of 2025 and broadcast live on ESPN. While TGL matches will take place in a stadium setting, players will tee off from actual grass and sand on a football-field sized surface, complete with a 64-foot-high and 46-feet wide simulator. Additionally, for short game shots within 50 yards, players will aim at a dynamic putting surface that adjusts to produce different slopes and breaks.

I firmly believe in the saying, "You can't be what you can’t see." Hearing Alexis and Neal recount stories of overcoming obstacles to establish one of the internet's leading sites—currently ranked #7 in US traffic and boasting the longest user duration of any major platform—it's clear that Reddit stands as the most influential online community platform.

While they understood the significance of their creation, witnessing their resolute determination to realize their vision and witnessing it exceed even their loftiest expectations emphasizes the value and substantial rewards of staying dedicated to a vision.

I found it fascinating to hear Neal discuss the early challenges of attracting advertisers, especially considering how advertising has become such a lucrative venture today, generating hundreds of millions annually by effectively targeting its remarkable communities.

Listening to Alexis articulate the importance of community, whether in the context of the internet or any business endeavor, shaped by his leadership at 776 Ventures, his VC fund, underscored the significance of community building.

Especially within the tech industry, where considerable value can stem from pioneering groundbreaking technology, it's equally apparent that fostering a community around a white-labeled technical architecture can yield just as much, if not greater, value. Meta, Reddit, and numerous others have demonstrated that being the first isn't necessary for absolute domination, provided your execution is impeccable.

The following panel featuring the CEO of SoFi, Anthony Noto, and SoFi Stadium leadership, Kevin Demoff, served as a masterclass on how naming rights can deliver exceptional value to sponsoring companies.

SoFi Stadium, conveniently located for much of the sprawling LA community, serves as an easily accessible venue. Over the next few years, it will host a diverse array of significant sporting events, in addition to the popular Chargers and Rams games. This includes serving as a venue for eight matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, including the opening match for the U.S. Men's National Team. Additionally, it is slated to host Super Bowl LXI in 2027 and the Summer Olympics in 2028.

I appreciate how Noto framed the $20 million annual licensing as an investment. With each event projected to attract billions of viewers, this will significantly elevate SoFi's visibility into an international brand. Consequently, the stadium sponsorship emerges as one of the most cost-effective advertising strategies in history, despite its high cost.

The third panel featured Christina Francis from Magic Johnson's family office, delving into the success achieved by the Laker Great in investing in historically overlooked communities. While there's a philanthropic drive, it's only sustainable when coupled with a profit-generating aspect that can reinvest capital to further the mission of doing good while also doing well.

Magic Johnson's journey to becoming a billionaire has received significant attention, with his achievements credited to innovative investment approaches. Rather than focusing on traditional areas such as Beverly Hills, commonly favored by family offices aiming to maintain wealth, Johnson is directing his investments towards emerging markets in East or Central LA. These regions, often characterized as food deserts or undergoing gentrification, attract corporations professing commitment to social impact, yet frequently fall short of delivering on their promises.

The family offices I'm involved with view the Johnson family as a prime example of incorporating social considerations into their investments, effectively merging profitability and philanthropy. It was intriguing to hear this topic explored alongside the ongoing evolution of the sports landscape, which has been unfolding since the Lakers era of the 1980s.

Playing basketball with my buddies in the 80s and early 90s was always a unique challenge. As a proud Angeleno, I rooted for Magic, yet couldn't help but admire Bird's precision, particularly from long range. I often found myself torn between playing as a Laker or a Celtic, but ultimately stuck with the Lakers to stay true to my roots. Growing up as a fan, I saw the NBA thrive during the golden era of the Bird-Magic rivalry, witnessing Magic's brilliance shine brightly near Hollywood, where his charisma and generational talent were perfectly showcased.

Here's the comments I received from potential investors who approached me after the event.

1. Have you noticed that many of the major partners of the largest Silicon Valley venture capital firms own homes in LA? (Yes, mostly in Malibu or the Silicon Beach i.e. Venice, Santa Monica, Hermosa Bech, etc.)

2. LA is already the go-to market for gaming. LA may soon become the go-to market for a variety of other venture areas, shifting deals and investments to the city. (Let’s go #LongLA)

3. Stanford has been oversaturated for years. Are you noticing a similar trend at UCLA, or what competition are you observing for deal flow among graduate schools? (Still very little)

Here's the pitch that LA is being underserved, particularly regarding Ultra High Net Worth individuals, who typically form the core investors in funds like mine or companies seeking funding but aren't among the privileged few who receive a VC term sheet.

The angle I noticed the most people nodding their head was around that top VCs are already making their way to LA to participate in the premier venture conferences, leaving behind a remarkable and highly beneficial venture footprint.

I've actively worked to broaden that footprint by arranging institutional dinner series, moderating panels for the UCLA Law Venture Society, mentoring at the UCLA Anderson Accelerator, and hosting pop-up venture workshops. These endeavors strive to educate investors keen on local opportunities and founders aspiring to raise their families in the lovely Southern California while they build their decacorn (with me on the board, if you please 🙏😁).

What simplifies matters for me is that I offer guidance and funding to founders who graduated from prestigious schools prior to attending UCLA's graduate programs, which are highly esteemed by top Silicon Valley VCs. This facilitates deals from LA to swiftly secure downstream funding rounds.

As the most applied to university in America (170,047 last year), each graduating class consistently exceeds its predecessor in both academic prowess and the accomplishments that accompany this excellence.

As a small fund, UCLA's graduate schools alone offer ample opportunities to fill a fund and then some. Therefore, I've directed my focus here, convinent given that I already work here teaching the Blockchain Fundamentals class and other courses within the Blockchain Technology Management Certificate Program.

Top universities are fertile grounds for talented student founders, particularly as they near graduation and opt for entrepreneurship over traditional employment. However, meaningful support from funds appears to be exceedingly rare from my observations. VCs genuinely interested in making an impact should engage in mentoring at campus accelerators, speaking at clubs, hosting events, treating potential founders to lunch, and organizing workshops to effectively identify and nurture talent.

Repeatedly, I've observed investment clubs providing a lasting experience that empowers managers to consistently raise funds, thanks to the camaraderie and events offered as supplements to the fund's investments. Angels frequently dedicate their time and dollars, offering more than any individual manager could expect to provide.

These angel groups typically require a set investment minimum, commonly around $50k per year into the group's fund or $25k into two deals. However, many members contribute more, especially if they've formed a strong connection with a particular investment or founder.

Yet, for other businesses, the significance of community holds just as much weight.

In my capacity as a mentor for the UCLA Anderson Accelerator, I was paired with MBA student Rondale Davis. Rondale had gained admission to the accelerator and is in the process of developing an impressive platform called GradPad. His platform is focused on enhancing alumni communities, providing students with more accessible job opportunities, and supporting universities through increased donations, all stemming from alumni feeling better served.

It's a narrative that nonprofits frequently fail to grasp. Establishing a vibrant community fosters donations. Despite the associated costs, the benefits significantly surpass those of investing in paid ads or other transactional forms of advertising.

Rondale has been visiting college campuses to advocate for the importance of cultivating alumni networks. His insightful perspectives on the potential for universities with strong alumni departments to attract up to 10x or 25x in donor dollars likely played a significant role in securing his victory at ACT House's pitch competition.

Universities and their alumni departments are better starting to recognize the importance of organizing events and digital communities centered on giving back, alumni connections, and fostering a sense of college community, which ultimately translates into increased donations.

As a result, universities across the nation are investing in this field, though they frequently encounter challenges in identifying appropriate service providers and establishing effective metrics beyond tracking the increase in donor contributions.

There is a clear correlation between the investment in constructing these communities and the subsequent returns expected within five to ten years. Platforms like GradPad aim to collaborate with universities in developing these initiatives.

Beyond academia, community building holds nearly universal relevance and importance.

My friend Erica Wenger from Park Rangers Capital wrote an article about "Elephants, Not Unicorns" that discusses a shift in the tech industry away from celebrating unicorns (startups valued at $1B) towards recognizing "elephants" - companies that prioritize community-building and long-term impact. It outlines two major trends driving this shift: the democratization of company creation and the increasing loneliness epidemic, particularly in the US. Elephants focus on attracting and retaining loyal members, driven by a clear purpose, and they emphasize transparency and storytelling.
